Instead of the usual arts, crafts and projects, try making butter with children. This activity is fun, produces something useful and helps the kids with excessive energy and anxiety.

Making butter is easy: pour some heavy cream into a jar with tight fitting lid and shake until you get butter. You will have to shake a lot.

This activity is great while you are doing other activities, especially those that demand high concentration, like solving math problems or memorizing poetry. If you have a child who likes to move and not sit, making butter can help you compromise. He will sit, yet still move while repeatedly shaking this jar. Making butter is a great ADHD activity, too.

The pride the children feel in their own butter making after getting an actual jar of butter out of this project is amazing to watch, too.
