During this gardening season, we have been learning about the formation of soil at homeschool. We learned that mature soil is composed of multiple things. It has parent rock on the bottom, followed by rock fragments. Then, there is subsoil, topsoil and rotting vegetable material. We have learned how it all comes together in How To Read the Landscape Book.

We made a project of Soil Study at Home. We collected the rocks, the sand, the different types of soil and layered it all in ajar, similarly to how it arranges itself in nature. Finally, we put some seeds close to the top. Then, we watered the seeds daily for a few weeks, watching them sprout and grow.

Soil Study At Home has been a wonderful study of nature and how it works. Because the jar is clear, the kids understand all layers well.
